Each section begins with a beautiful 8-page introductory spread on the region as a whole, followed by comprehensive and up-to-date physical and political maps of the region's countries.

The extensive index has more than 100,000 place-names from the reference maps, each with its geo- graphical coordinates. Cross-referencing to alternative and former names is also possible, and many of these names appear on the maps as well as in the index. The index is accompanied by a valuable, explanatory glossary of geographical terms.
